The Story

In this story, you play as Princess Guinevere, newly betrothed to the famous king (or queen) of Camelot. But you have a secret, one that warns you of great danger coming for Camelot, your betrothed, and your most loyal knight…

Choices is a very romance-driven app, and this is only one of the best and most famous love-triangles in Western Literature. In this story, I wanted to push away from an HBO-inspired grimdark fantasy take on costumes and backgrounds — the goal was to very much embrace the innocence and wonder of a medieval, chivalrous courtly romance and fairy tale.

Inspired by fairy tales

Each book within the app has the option of starting with a theme screen, which is a background image that should capture the promise and potential of what the story will deliver in subsequent chapters. Personalized and specific art for these screens is the intent.

For Guinevere, I was inspired by fairy tale illustrations, medieval tapestries, and Disney’s Sleeping Beauty to create a multipart theme screen to capture the beginning, the lowpoint, and the happy ending of the story. Relying on patterned and detailed artwork to capture the tapestry feel, using color to show progression of the story beats, and creating a flow from one part of the image to the next were the primary goals of this piece.

The separate image is a farewell piece to celebrate the reader’s victory with their beloved love interest.

Guinevere

I wanted a specific color theme for Guinevere’s outfits throughout the story: sometimes more blue when aligned with Lancelot; sometimes more red when with Arthur. Purple tones needed to feel present throughout as her signature color.

The Good King and his Loyal knight

We allowed the player to customize both race and gender for the roles of both Arthur and Lancelot. While the player will only choose one look for their love interests, it’s always an unique challenge to create a character that “feels” the same across the different looks.

Key Art for the Love Interests

In Choices, we try to find ways to highlight the Love Interests and provide special art for the player’s enjoyment. These following are examples for this book. I collected reference for character likeness, pose and action, and thus provided direction for the image to be completed by another talented artist on the team or by external teams.
